The Book of Daniel is an American drama television series created by Jack Kenny that centered on Daniel Webster, an Episcopalian bishop dealing with a deeply dysfunctional family, prescription drug addiction, and regular hallucinations of a modern, jeans-wearing Jesus Christ. Daniel struggles to maintain his faith and keep his household together amidst severe personal and marital crises, including his wife's alcoholism, his rebellious children's respective issues with drug dealing, sexuality, and arrest, and the disapproval of his mother-in-law, Bishop Beatrice Brown. As Daniel attempts to navigate his unorthodox pastoral duties while hiding his own severe flaws, the series explores themes of morality, hypocrisy, and redemption. The show generated considerable controversy among conservative Christian organizations in the United States prior to its broadcast due to its provocative depiction of clergy and its contemporary portrayal of Jesus, leading to its cancellation by NBC after only three episodes aired, though all eight produced episodes were eventually made available online.
