The Critic is an animated sitcom that follows the life of Jay Sherman, a cynical, overweight 36-year-old film critic for the fictional television show Coming Attractions in New York City. Despite his passion for cinema, Jay's professional life is dominated by reviewing terrible movies, while his personal life is plagued by an eccentric, adoptive wealthy family, a demanding ex-wife, and struggles with his weight and self-esteem. Created by Al Jean and Mike Reiss, the series is renowned for its biting satire, lightning-fast visual gags, and countless parodies of famous Hollywood movies. Throughout the series, Jay navigates the absurdities of Manhattan media culture alongside his colorful supporting cast, including his pretentious adoptive billionaire father Franklin, his alcoholic mother Eleanor, his sweet son Marty, and his aggressive boss Duke Phillips. Despite critical praise and a dedicated cult following, the show struggled with ratings during its initial run, leading to cancellations and revivals across ABC and Fox before cementing its legacy as a classic 1990s animated gem.
