The Dead Zone follows the life of Johnny Smith, a small-town schoolteacher who awakens from a six-year coma following a near-fatal car accident. Upon regaining consciousness, he discovers that he has developed a powerful psychic ability: whenever he touches a person or an object, he experiences vivid, often disturbing visions of the past or future. These 'flashes' provide him with glimpses into events that have occurred or are yet to happen, forcing him to navigate a world that has moved on without him. As Johnny struggles to reconcile with his lost life—including his former fiancée Sarah, who has since married the local sheriff—he begins using his gift to help solve crimes and prevent tragedies. However, his most significant conflict arises from his visions of a catastrophic future involving Greg Stillson, a charismatic but dangerous politician. Johnny must decide whether to intervene in the course of history, knowing that his actions could alter the fate of the world while putting his own life and those he loves in constant danger.
