Semyon Semyonovich Gorbunkov, a modest Soviet economist, embarks on a cruise abroad. While in a foreign port, he accidentally slips on a banana peel and falls, shouting 'Damn it!' (Chort poberi!). This exclamation is mistaken by local smugglers for a secret code, leading them to cast a plaster cast on his arm filled with diamonds instead of the intended target. Upon his return to the USSR, Semyon finds himself at the center of a chaotic investigation involving the police and a bumbling gang of criminals. The film follows Semyon's attempts to assist the police in catching the smugglers while trying to keep his wife from discovering his involvement with the criminal underworld. As the gang attempts to retrieve the diamonds, Semyon is thrust into a series of slapstick encounters, high-speed chases, and hilarious misunderstandings. It remains one of the most beloved Soviet comedies, celebrated for its sharp satire, iconic musical numbers, and memorable performances.
