The Ed Sullivan Show

Originally broadcast as Toast of the Town, The Ed Sullivan Show was a pioneering American television variety show that ran on CBS from June 20, 1948, to June 6, 1971. Hosted by entertainment columnist Ed Sullivan, the program became a massive cultural touchstone by bringing a wildly diverse array of talent directly into American living rooms, bridging vaudeville, Broadway, opera, comedy, and emerging rock and roll. Sullivan's famously stiff and awkward physical demeanor contrasted sharply with his exceptional instinct for what would captivate the public, making the show the ultimate platform for stardom. The series was defined by its history-making broadcast moments, most notably introducing The Beatles to the United States in February 1964—an event watched by an estimated 73 million viewers that catalyzed the British Invasion. Throughout its legendary 23-year run, the show served as a primary national stage for iconic musicians, groundbreaking comedians, ballet dancers, acrobats, and novelty acts. Despite facing stiff competition and shifting cultural landscapes in the late 1960s, The Ed Sullivan Show cemented its legacy as the quintessential Sunday night family tradition and a monumental archive of 20th-century entertainment history.
