"The First Churchills" is a landmark 1969 British historical drama series created by Donald Wilson, notable for being the very first program broadcast in color on BBC Two. The series chronicles the epic lives and political machinations of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and his formidable wife, Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough. Spanning several decades from the Restoration to the reign of Queen Anne, the narrative explores their passionate romance, their rise to immense wealth and power, and their pivotal roles in the political and military triumphs of Great Britain. Set against the backdrop of shifting European alliances and intense court intrigues, the plot focuses heavily on John's military genius on the battlefields of the War of the Spanish Succession and Sarah's profound influence over Queen Anne. As close confidantes turn into bitter rivals—most notably Sarah's falling out with the Queen—the Churchills must navigate treacherous political landscapes to protect their legacy. The series offers a rich, intimate, and sweeping portrait of ambition, love, and loyalty at the highest levels of the British monarchy.
