Set in 1827 London, the series follows Inspector John Marlott of the Thames River Police as he stumbles upon a gruesome discovery while investigating a smuggling ring: a corpse stitched together from the body parts of various children. Tasked by Home Secretary Robert Peel with tracking down the perpetrator, Marlott embarks on a dark and chilling investigation that leads him into the grim underbelly of Regency-era London, where he encounters body snatchers, early medical science, and a conspiracy that suggests someone is attempting to create life from death. As the mystery deepens, Marlott's sanity is pushed to the brink as he uncovers terrifying connections between the macabre murders and the works of author Mary Shelley. The narrative intricately blends historical figures, such as Sir Robert Peel and Thomas Wakley, with gothic horror, exploring themes of morality, mortality, and the terrifying ambition of scientific progress unchecked by human empathy.
