The Gentle Touch is a pioneering British police procedural drama that aired on ITV from 1980 to 1984. The series follows Detective Inspector Maggie Forbes, a widowed mother and a high-ranking officer in the Metropolitan Police, as she navigates the challenges of a male-dominated force while balancing the demands of raising her teenage son. It was notable for being the first British police series to feature a woman as the lead character, breaking away from the traditional male-centric narratives of the era. Throughout the series, Maggie Forbes tackles gritty criminal investigations ranging from murder and robbery to organized crime, often facing skepticism and sexism from her colleagues. The show is celebrated for its realistic portrayal of police work and its focus on the personal and professional struggles of a working mother in law enforcement. Its success paved the way for future female-led crime dramas in British television.
