The Glittering Prizes

Created by Frederic Raphael, 'The Glittering Prizes' is a critically acclaimed 1976 British television drama miniseries that traces the lives, loves, and disillusionments of a tight-knit group of ambitious students from Cambridge University in the 1950s through the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s. The narrative primarily focuses on Adam Morris, a talented, Jewish-born writer grappling with his identity, integrity, and the temptations of worldly success. As the characters navigate their respective fields—academia, television, politics, and literature—they must constantly choose between artistic purity and the alluring, glittering prizes of mainstream establishment achievement. The series is renowned for its sharp, literate dialogue, complex characterizations, and astute sociological observations regarding class, anti-Semitism, and intellectual selling-out in postwar Britain. Over the course of the episodes, the initial idealism of the Cambridge circle gives way to fractured marriages, professional compromises, and the bitter realizations of middle age. It stands as a landmark achievement in British television drama, capturing the zeitgeist of an era defined by rapid social change and shifting moral boundaries.
