The Great Plague

Set in 16th-century Seville, the series follows Mateo, a former soldier who returns to the city to rescue the son of a deceased friend. Upon his arrival, he is arrested by the Inquisition, but is granted a reprieve on the condition that he solves a series of gruesome murders that appear to be linked to a new outbreak of the plague. As he navigates the city's dark underbelly, he uncovers a web of corruption, religious fanaticism, and political intrigue. As the epidemic spreads, the social order of Seville begins to crumble, forcing Mateo to confront his own past and the powerful figures controlling the city. The series provides a gritty, atmospheric look at the Spanish Golden Age, highlighting the stark contrast between the immense wealth brought by trade with the New World and the squalor and desperation of the plague-stricken population.
