The Lady in Butcher's House

The Lady in Butcher's House follows the story of Hu Jiao, the daughter of a local butcher, and Xu Qingjia, a frail but brilliant scholar. The two are betrothed to each other from childhood, a promise made by their parents. Despite their vastly different backgrounds and temperaments—Hu Jiao is boisterous and skilled with a cleaver, while Xu Qingjia is refined and bookish—they find themselves navigating the complexities of marriage and societal expectations in the Song Dynasty. As Xu Qingjia rises through the ranks of the imperial bureaucracy, the couple faces numerous challenges, including political intrigue, corruption, and the pressures of public life. Hu Jiao must learn to adapt to her new status as a government official's wife, often using her unconventional methods and street-smart wisdom to help her husband solve cases and navigate the treacherous waters of the imperial court. Together, they form an unlikely but formidable team, proving that their bond is stronger than the obstacles placed in their path.
