Based on Mikhail Bulgakov's seminal 20th-century novel, this 2005 Russian miniseries directed by Vladimir Bortko is a faithful adaptation of the complex, multi-layered narrative. The story unfolds in three interconnected planes: the arrival of Satan (known as Woland) and his eccentric retinue in 1930s Soviet Moscow, where they wreak havoc on the corrupt literary elite; the tragic love story between a disillusioned writer known as 'The Master' and his devoted muse, Margarita; and a philosophical retelling of the trial and execution of Yeshua Ha-Nozri (Jesus) by Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem. As Woland exposes the greed, hypocrisy, and cowardice of the Soviet citizens, the narrative weaves together satire, mysticism, and profound existential inquiry. Margarita eventually makes a desperate pact with the devil to save her lover, leading to a surreal and supernatural climax. The series is celebrated for its atmospheric depiction of Stalinist-era Moscow and its commitment to the dense, philosophical themes of the original source material.
