The Miniaturist

Set in 17th-century Amsterdam, the story follows Nella Oortman, an eighteen-year-old girl who arrives at a grand house on the Herengracht canal to begin her life as the wife of wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt. Upon her arrival, she is gifted a cabinet-sized replica of their home by her husband, which she begins to furnish with the help of an elusive and mysterious miniaturist. As Nella receives increasingly uncanny and prophetic miniature creations, she realizes that the objects are mirroring the secrets and dangers lurking within the household. As the narrative unfolds, Nella uncovers the dark truths behind the Brandt family's facade, including the cold demeanor of her sister-in-law Marin and the precarious social and religious climate of the city. The series explores themes of power, autonomy, and the struggle for identity in a rigid society, as the miniaturist's creations seem to exert a strange, controlling influence over the fates of those living in the house.
