The Neighborhood follows Calvin Butler, a opinionated and old-school mechanic living in a historically Black neighborhood in Los Angeles, whose life is upended when a friendly, incredibly optimistic Midwestern professional named Dave Johnson moves in next door with his family. While Dave tries hard to win over his new neighbors and bridge cultural gaps, Calvin remains deeply suspicious of the gentrifying newcomers and their relentless cheerfulness. Despite their clashing personalities and differing worldviews, the two families gradually forge an unlikely bond, navigating modern social issues, family dynamics, and community life together. Over the course of the series, the relationship between Calvin and Dave evolves from cautious neighborly friction into a deep, enduring friendship. Alongside their wives, Gemma and Tina, and their respective children, the show explores how two very different American families find common ground. Through humor, heart, and occasional generational clashes, the neighborhood serves as a backdrop for exploring race, community, changing landscapes, and the universal need for good neighbors.
