Set during the Donghak Peasant Revolution of 1894, the story follows two half-brothers with different mothers who find themselves on opposing sides of a historical conflict. Baek Yi-kang, the illegitimate son of a wealthy and cruel local official, is forced to live a life of servitude and brutality, while his younger half-brother, Baek Yi-hyun, is a refined scholar who studied in Japan and dreams of modernizing Joseon. As the peasant uprising gains momentum against the corrupt government and foreign intervention, the brothers are swept into the chaos of war. Their paths diverge as Yi-kang joins the peasant army to fight for justice and equality, while Yi-hyun is drawn into the complex political machinations of the era. The series explores themes of brotherhood, sacrifice, and the struggle for national identity during one of the most turbulent periods in Korean history.
