The Paradise

Set in the late 19th century in Northern England, The Paradise follows the story of Denise Lovett, a young, ambitious woman who moves to a bustling town to work in her uncle's drapery shop. Finding the shop struggling due to the opening of The Paradise, the country's first grand department store, Denise secures a position at the store instead. She quickly rises through the ranks, catching the eye of the store's charismatic and enigmatic owner, John Moray. The series explores the social and economic shifts of the Victorian era, focusing on the intense professional and personal rivalry between the modern, innovative department store and the traditional small businesses of the high street. As Denise navigates the complex hierarchy of the store's staff and Moray's complicated personal life, she must balance her growing ambition with her moral compass, all while the store itself becomes a character that transforms the lives of everyone who enters its doors.
