The Return of Sherlock Holmes is a British television mystery drama series adapted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories. Starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and David Burke (later replaced by Edward Hardwicke) as Dr. John Watson, the series is widely regarded as the most faithful and definitive screen adaptation of the literary canon. Set in Victorian London, Holmes uses his unmatched powers of deduction, observation, and forensic science to solve baffling crimes alongside his loyal friend and chronicler, Dr. Watson. Spanning multiple seasons, the series covers some of Doyle's most famous cases, including 'The Adventure of the Empty House', which explains Holmes's miraculous survival at Reichenbach Falls, as well as 'The Sign of the Four' and 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' feature-length specials. Through meticulous attention to period detail, atmospheric direction, and Brett's iconic, intense portrayal of the eccentric detective, the show became a benchmark for all subsequent Sherlock Holmes adaptations.
