Naofumi Iwatani, an easygoing Japanese youth, is summoned to a parallel world along with three other men to become the world's 'Cardinal Heroes.' Each hero is equipped with a legendary weapon, and Naofumi is granted the Shield, the weakest of the four. Due to his lack of charisma and experience, he is quickly betrayed, falsely accused of a heinous crime, and stripped of his belongings, leaving him isolated and distrustful of everyone. Driven by resentment and the need to survive the impending 'Waves of Catastrophe' that threaten the kingdom, Naofumi embarks on a journey of redemption. He purchases a slave named Raphtalia to fight by his side, and together they navigate a world that views him as a pariah. As he grows stronger and gathers allies, Naofumi must balance his desire for vengeance with the responsibility of protecting a world that has treated him with nothing but contempt.
