Set between the events of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, the special follows Chewbacca and Han Solo as they travel to Chewie's home planet of Kashyyyk to celebrate Life Day, a major Wookiee holiday. Along the way, Chewbacca's family—his wife Malla, son Lumpy, and father Itchy—await his return while watching various holographic entertainments and broadcasts. The narrative is heavily driven by musical numbers, variety acts, and bizarre comedic segments featuring guest stars like Bea Arthur, Art Carney, and Jefferson Starship. While attempting to evade the Imperial forces blockading the planet, Han and Chewie must overcome stormtrooper patrols to make it home in time for the ceremony. The special is infamous in television history for its surreal tone, psychedelic sequences, and the unexpected introduction of Boba Fett via an animated segment, making it a legendary piece of pop culture trivia.
