Across the globe, unexplained and terrifying phenomena begin emerging from the oceans. Whales aggressively attack tourist vessels in Canada, lethal swarms of jellyfish invade Venice's canals, deadly ice worms destabilize the continental shelf off Norway triggering undersea landslides, and mutating bacteria carried by shellfish claim human lives in France. As the world watches in horror, scientists across international borders begin to piece together disparate pieces of ecological data and realize these are not isolated anomalies. A diverse coalition of marine biologists, oceanographers, and geologists—including Sigur Johanson, Charlie Wagner, and Cécile Roche—concludes that the world's oceans are being manipulated by an unknown collective intelligence residing in the deep abyss. Termed the 'yrr', this ancient, single-celled swarm consciousness has grown aware of humanity's destructive footprint on marine ecosystems and has weaponized ocean life in an act of self-defense. Embarking on a high-stakes Arctic research expedition aboard the scientific vessel Thorvaldson, the international scientific team races against time to establish communication with the entity. As geopolitical tensions rise and military factions push for the annihilation of the threat, the scientists must find a way to convey peaceful intent before humanity triggers an all-out apocalyptic counterattack from the Earth's greatest ecosystem.
