The Synagogue in the Tropics

Set against the vibrant and unforgiving backdrop of early 20th-century colonial South America, 'The Synagogue in the Tropics' follows a resilient community of Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jewish refugees who flee persecution in Europe only to face entirely new trials in the Amazonian frontier. The narrative centers on David Levy, an ambitious merchant attempting to establish a new life and a house of worship amidst the rubber boom, rubber barons, and indigenous cultures. As tropical diseases, economic exploitation, and cultural assimilation threaten to tear the fragile community apart, David must navigate complex alliances and dangerous local politics to preserve his people's heritage. The series weaves a rich tapestry of historical drama, exploring themes of displacement, religious devotion, and the unexpected bonds forged in isolation. Alongside David is Miriam, a fiercely independent botanist who challenges traditional gender roles of the era, and Governor Silva, a pragmatic colonial official whose ambitions often conflict with the immigrants' survival. Together, the ensemble cast brings to life a largely forgotten chapter of diaspora history, showcasing both the resilience of the human spirit and the heavy cost of paradise.
