The Three Stooges is an iconic American vaudeville and comedy act best known for their series of 190 short subject films produced by Columbia Pictures between 1934 and 1959. The act primarily featured Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard (later replaced by Shemp Howard, Joe Besser, and Curly Joe DeRita), who portrayed a trio of bumbling, slapstick-prone characters. Their humor was defined by physical comedy, eye-poking, head-bonking, and a chaotic, anarchic style that defied social norms and authority figures. The premise of their shorts typically involved the trio attempting to hold down various jobs or navigate social situations, only to have their efforts descend into total mayhem due to their incompetence and short tempers. Despite their constant internal bickering and physical abuse of one another, the Stooges remained an inseparable unit, often serving as the underdog heroes who inadvertently exposed the pretentiousness of the wealthy or the villainy of con artists. Their legacy remains a cornerstone of American comedy, influencing generations of performers with their unique brand of 'slapstick' violence.
