Total Request Live

Total Request Live (commonly known as TRL) was an American television program broadcast on MTV that featured music videos being counted down based on viewer votes. Premiering in 1998, the show became a massive cultural phenomenon of the late 1990s and 2000s, broadcasting from MTV's Times Square studios in New York City. Fans would gather outside the street-level windows in large crowds, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite pop, rock, and hip-hop stars who frequently appeared as guest hosts and interviewees. The series served as a primary launchpad for the teen pop explosion, heavily featuring acts like Britney Spears, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and Christina Aguilera, alongside hosting monumental moments in pop culture history. Hosted primarily by Carson Daly, TRL defined a generation's interaction with music media before transitioning into internet-dominated formats and ultimately concluding its original run in 2008, followed by brief revivals.
