White Tower

Overview

Based on the classic novel by Toyoko Yamasaki, The White Tower is a gripping medical drama that explores the dark underbelly of a prestigious university hospital. The story centers on the intense rivalry between Goro Zaizen, a brilliant but ruthlessly ambitious surgeon who craves power and status, and Shuji Satomi, an idealistic internist who prioritizes patient welfare above all else. As Zaizen maneuvers through the corrupt political landscape of the medical department to secure a professorship, his arrogance and disregard for medical ethics lead to a catastrophic malpractice case. The series serves as a scathing critique of the rigid, hierarchical structure of Japanese academia and the medical establishment. It delves into themes of professional integrity, the moral decay caused by unchecked ambition, and the legal battles that ensue when the 'white tower' of medicine attempts to protect its own at the expense of human life. Through the clash of these two opposing philosophies, the drama forces viewers to confront the cost of success and the true meaning of the Hippocratic Oath.
