While playing golf along the rugged Welsh coastline, Bobby Jones, the modest vicar's son and former naval officer, slices his shot over the edge of a cliff. Instead of retrieving his ball, he discovers a mortally injured man lying battered on the rocks below. With his dying breath, the stranger utters a singular, confounding question: 'Why didn't they ask Evans?' Found with only the photograph of a stunning woman in his pocket, the man dies shortly after, launching Bobby into an unsettling enigma. Sensing foul play when an attempt is made on Bobby's life soon afterward, he reunites with his spirited, razor-sharp childhood friend, Lady Frances 'Frankie' Derwent. Together, the mismatched pair embark on a daring amateur sleuthing expedition across 1930s England to decipher the victim's identity and determine the meaning behind his perplexing final query. Along the way, their covert investigations take them into the eccentric heart of English high society, confronting suspicious aristocrats, sinister doctors, and deep-seated deceits. Adapted and directed by Hugh Laurie, this classic Agatha Christie mystery blends witty banter, vintage period charm, and intricate plotting. Bobby and Frankie soon realize that answering who 'Evans' is may unmask a cold-blooded conspiracy involving disputed inheritances, secret identities, and perilous family secrets that several people are prepared to kill to protect.
