You Rang, M'Lord?

Set in the 1920s in the London townhouse of the wealthy Meldrum family, You Rang, M'Lord? explores the rigid class distinctions of post-World War I British society. The series centers on the stark contrast between the pampered, eccentric aristocratic family upstairs and their cynical, overworked, and scheming servants downstairs. The narrative is heavily driven by the secret romance between Alf Stokes and Lady Agatha, alongside the various plots, blackmail attempts, and domestic misadventures of the household staff. Created by the legendary writing duo Jimmy Perry and David Croft, the show subverts traditional period dramas by playing the social hypocrisy, snobbery, and moral failings of the upper classes for broad comedy. While the upstairs residents navigate crumbling fortunes, social scandals, and romance, the downstairs staff—led by the formidable butler Mr. Stokes and the tyrannical housekeeper Mrs. Lipton—conspire to improve their own lot in life, often at the expense of their employers.
