Robert Shayne was an American stage, film, and television actor best remembered for his iconic role as Inspector William Henderson in the classic television series Adventures of Superman (1952–1958). Born Robert Donald DaOette in Yonkers, New York, he began his professional acting career on the stage before transitioning to Hollywood feature films in the late 1930s and 1940s, appearing in numerous Warner Bros. productions alongside top stars of the era.
Throughout a prolific career spanning over five decades, Shayne successfully transitioned from leading man and supporting player in classic cinema to a ubiquitous presence on television. He appeared in scores of television shows ranging from classic westerns to science fiction and drama series. Even after losing an eye to cancer in the late 1950s—an adjustment he seamlessly carried into his acting—he remained active in the industry well into his later years, leaving a lasting legacy as one of television's most recognizable character actors.
