Biography & Career Overview
Taika David Waititi is an Academy Award-winning New Zealand filmmaker, actor, and comedian celebrated for his distinctive deadpan humor, eccentric storytelling, and deeply poignant human narratives. Rising from the Wellington comedy and theater circuits alongside collaborator Jemaine Clement, Waititi initially gained international acclaim for his inventive short film 'Two Cars, One Night' (2004), which secured an Oscar nomination. He quickly cemented his status as a major cinematic voice with low-budget Kiwi comedy hits such as 'Eagle vs Shark' (2007) and 'Boy' (2010), both of which were critical darlings.
In 2014, Waititi co-directed, wrote, and starred in the cult horror-comedy mockumentary 'What We Do in the Shadows', portraying the neurotic, dandified vampire Viago. His follow-up feature, 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' (2016), set local box office records and caught the eye of Hollywood. Marvel Studios hired Waititi to revitalize their Thor franchise, resulting in the critically praised, neon-soaked blockbuster 'Thor: Ragnarok' (2017), in which he also performed the lovable motion-capture rock alien Korg. Two years later, Waititi achieved peak critical honors for his anti-hate satire 'Jojo Rabbit' (2019), where he portrayed an imaginary Adolf Hitler; the film earned six Academy Award nominations, winning Waititi the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Beyond directing, Waititi is a prolific on-screen performer and executive producer in international television and cinema. He has brought his singular screen presence to prestige series like 'Our Flag Means Death', playing the swashbuckling pirate Blackbeard, as well as voicing the bounty hunter droid IG-11 in 'The Mandalorian'. Co-creator of acclaimed television shows like FX's 'Reservation Dogs' and Apple TV+'s 'Time Bandits', Waititi continues to be a powerhouse creative force bridging indie sensibilities with major global entertainment franchises.
